Damen Shipyards Group has delivered five zero-emission ferries to Arriva Denmark in Copenhagen.

Arriva is operating the vessels on behalf of Danish public transport agency Movia. The introduction of the new ferries to the public transport service will reduce overall nitrogen oxide emissions by 2.5 per cent, carbon dioxide emissions by 10 per cent and particulate emissions by 66 per cent.

The vessels’ hulls have been designed to minimise water resistance and are equipped with a network of sensors to enable remote monitoring of sailing patterns, battery lifecycle and swell dynamics. This will allow the ferries operations to be optimised for greater efficiency and reduced downtime for maintenance.

Damen has also investigated shore solutions for electricity supply to meet Movia’s requirement that 60 per cent of the electricity for the operation come from a sustainable source. Working with Echandia Marine, Heliox and Staubli, Damen has developed a solution that charges the ferries in seven minutes at the end of each trip they make. The solution also features an auto-mooring system to ensure a secure connection between the vessel and charging infrastructure.

“This, in my opinion, is where Damen really add value to a project,” said Martin Verstraaten sales manager at Damen. “Our involvement is not limited to the shipbuilding scope alone, we take responsibility for the entirety of the project. We provide a focal point where all partners involved the project come together to fulfil their individual roles in alignment with one another. With this, the project benefits from cohesive, centralised direction for maximum efficiency.”
