International cruise operator Carnival Cruise Line will launch the first-ever roller coaster at sea on its new ship Mardi Gras, when it debuts in 2020.

Built by Maurer Rides in Munich, the all-electric “ultimate sea coaster” Bolt will offer passengers 800 feet of twists and turns, with riders able to choose their speed up to almost 40 miles per hour. The motorcycle-style seats travel 187 feet above sea level, offering 360-degree views of the ocean. Just like land-based roller coasters, riders are photographed during the experience for a keepsake.

“Mardi Gras will be our most innovative ship ever with some truly special features and attractions, highlighted by Bolt, the first roller coaster at sea,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “Bolt will continue the tradition of Carnival providing exciting new ways for our guests to 'Choose Fun.'  We are so thrilled to introduce this one-of-a-kind, game-changing, exhilarating attraction – our guests are going to love it!”

Mardi Gras will be based in Port Canaveral, Florida, which will also feature a new terminal. Itinerary information will be revealed in January 2019 with additional details about the ship’s other features throughout the year.
