Rottnest Fast Ferries’ newest vessel, Ocean Master, has successfully completed sea trials less than a year after being commissioned. It is now enroute to Perth, Australia, to join the ferry operator’s fleet.
The 32-metre aluminium catamaran, which was designed by Incat Crowther and constructed by Austal Philippines, has capacity for 400 passengers and five crew across three decks. Ocean Master features a flexible seating configuration in order to accommodate wheelchair users, luggage storage and bicycles. It also has a bar and kiosk and five bathrooms.
“We’re thrilled this vessel has been completed so quickly and will enter service in time to help meet demand during our busiest period of the year,” said Luke Crispin and James Mulholland, directors of Rottnest Fast Ferries. “Incat Crowther and the project team were attentive and responsive throughout and we couldn’t be happier with the process and the final result. Ocean Master will deliver a first-class experience for passengers travelling to Rottnest Island and we are excited to have it in service this summer.”
Ocean Master was commissioned to operate the 30-kilometre route from Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth to Rottnest Island, off the coast of Western Australia, in just 45 minutes. The ferry is powered by two 1,029-kilowatt diesel engines driving fixed pitch propellers, which allow the vessel to achieve an operating speed of 25 knots.
“Successfully achieving design, construction, sea trials, delivery and operation in less a year is a great outcome for all involved,” said Dan Mace, technical manager at Incat Crowther. “This vessel has been truly customised for Rottnest Fast Ferries. It’s a testament to the project team that we have been able to complete this project successfully and on-time. We are delighted to see it ready to enter service.”
Incat Crowther collaborated closely with shipbuilder Austal Philippines during construction to create and deliver on the build schedule.
“The Austal Philippines team has delivered this impressive new catamaran in less than 12 months – exceeding expectations for productivity, while maintaining the highest construction standards and product quality,” said Wayne Murray, president of Austal Asia.
