Classification society ClassNK has announced that its register has exceeded 190 million gross tons for the first time.

At the end of September 2011, the register of the world’s largest classification society listed 7,596 ships totalling 190.6 million gross tons, with a net total of more than 11 million gross tons added to the register in the first nine months of the year. Newbuildings account for roughly 87 per cent of the new additions to ClassNK’s register in 2011.

ClassNK chairman and president Noboru Ueda commented: “The continued growth of our register in spite of the current tough economic climate and increased scrapping of older vessels reflects our unmatched commitment to service, as well as our growing presence in the maritime community around the world.”
