Power and automation technology group ABB is to launch a new Dynamic AC (DAC) system to help cruise operators optimise engine speeds and significantly reduce fuel consumption and costs.

Part of ABB’s portfolio of power distribution products, the DAC system has been designed for larger ships with greater than 20MW power. The system automatically adjusts the rotational speed of the diesel generating sets in the engine, allowing the system frequency to vary within the specified range. This reduces wasted energy.

“No matter what bunker costs are now, shipowners look to the long term and always want ways to maximise fuel efficiency,” said Juha Koskela, managing director of ABB’s marine and ports business. “Once again, our strong emphasis on research and development has produced a solution of great business value to our customers.”

By optimising cruise ships’ engine speed, the DAC system could help shipowners save up to 2,000 tons of fuel per year (6%).

“ABB has had great success providing power and propulsion solutions to the cruise industry,” said Koskela. “Dynamic AC is another tool for cruise companies to build fleets which are more efficient and more environmentally friendly.”
