Alfa Laval aims to expand LNG product portfolio

By Rebecca Gibson |

Alfa Laval has expanded its LNG solutions portfolio by entering into a patent licence agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME).

Signed in March 2015, the agreement will enable Alfa Laval to use DSME’s patents on high-pressure fuel gas supply systems with its Fuel Conditioning Modules for use on natural gas-powered ships. The agreement also establishes a foundation for Alfa Laval to use DSME technology to adapt its fuel conditioning systems to use LNG as secondary or tertiary fuel onboard commercial ships of the future.

“The agreement strengthens Alfa Laval’s position as a reliable partner to LNG carriers and a leader in further developing fuel conditioning technologies for alternative fuels for marine propulsion,” says Roberto Comelli, Alfa Laval’s business manager for Fuel Conditioning Systems.

The agreement also strengthens Alfa Laval’s commitment to providing ship owners with more comprehensive solutions to use cleaner, affordable fuels, such as LNG as alternatives to heavy fuel oil, marine diesel oil and marine gas oil.

“We fully expect the development of LNG technologies to continue and the uptake of LNG to increase over the next decade, and Alfa Laval will be well-positioned to meet the demand,” said Niclas Dahl, market unit manager of Marine Energy at Alfa Laval.
