Alfa Laval has secured a repeat order to supply its PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems to Danish ferry operator DFDS, enabling the line to comply with upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) emissions regulations.
Signed in June and approved by stakeholders in the second quarter of 2013, the €19.5 million contract will see the systems retrofitted to five ro-ro and three ro-pax vessels between January and July 2014.
PureSOx scrubbers reduce sulphur content from heavy fuel oil exhaust gas, enabling DFDS to continue using this type of fuel when the IMO’s new 0.1 per cent sulphur emissions regulations come into force in January 2015. By eliminating the need for DFDS to switch to expensive low-sulphur fuel, the technology also reduces the line’s operating costs.
“With our investments in scrubber systems, DFDS is among the companies leading the way to compliance with the sulphur emissions regulations that will take effect in 2015,” said DFDS vice president and head of technical organisation, Kasper Moos. “We believe hybrid scrubbers are among the most efficient alternatives to using expensive low-sulphur fuel oil. Based on our previous experience, PureSOx has proven to be a reliable and efficient retrofit solution.”
Since Alfa Laval’s partnership with DFDS began in 2008 when the PureSOx system was installed on Ficaria Seaways, the company has retrofitted four ro-ro vessels. Following the completion of the latest contract, 12 DFDS ships will feature the scrubber technology.
