Several Alfa Laval systems have helped Norwegian Cruise Line’s largest-ever ship, Norwegian Escape, to remain operating to a high standard since she first entered service in November 2015.
Fuelled by heavy fuel oil (HFO), with low-sulphur HFO and marine gas oil (MGO) used as needed, Norwegian Escape has six Alfa Laval S separation systems for HFO and one for MGO. It also has a system for lube oil and two oil-fired Alfa Laval Aalborg OM boilers.
The Alfa Laval PureDry system recovers Norwegian Escape’s fuel waste, while five Alfa Laval XW boilers convert waste heat from the engines into useable energy. Environmental compliance is ensured by an Alfa Laval MEP freshwater generator, a PureBilge system and a 500 m3/h PureBallast system.
“Alfa Laval is pleased to support Norwegian in taking the Breakaway cruise concept to the next level,” said Peter Leifland, president of the Marine and Diesel Division, and executive vice president of the Alfa Laval Group. “We are proud to supply such a wide range of systems that contribute to making Norwegian Escape the very best in class.”
Constructed at Meyer Werft’s yard in Germany, the 164,600gt Norwegian Escape is Norwegian’s first Breakaway Plus ship and can accommodate 4,200 guests. The vessel features various industry firsts, sports and water park facilities, private dining options, the first-ever floating Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville restaurant, the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, the first at-sea Lacoste and Carolina Herrera boutiques and more. Entertainment options include two Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals headlining in the Escape Theater, and an exclusive Supper Club offering that enables guests to enjoy dinner and a 360° post-modern cabaret.
Norwegian Escape is the largest-ever cruise ship to homeport year-round in Miami, where she sails weekly seven-day cruises to destinations such as St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas.
