Baleària, which operates ferry services in Spain and the Bahamas, plans to invest around €35 million to construct a new ferry terminal at the port of Havana in Cuba.

The plans, which have been submitted to the Cuban authorities, call for a multi-functional passenger terminal and accompanying commercial, cultural and leisure services. It is hoped the new terminal will help to facilitate regular maritime links between Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean.

Baleària also plans to build four 18m, solar-powered vessels, which are modelled on the ferries that have been operating from the port of Denia in Spain for the past two years. The eco-efficienct vessels will be able to carry up to 100 passengers and it is expected that around two million people could use the system annually.

Baleària already has two necessary permits from the US government to begin ferry service to and from Cuba, but is still awaiting approval from the authorities in Cuba.
