Bodrum Cruise Port in Turkey closed its 2024 cruise season by hosting a joint environmental conservation and maritime education event with Marella Cruises and local students.

During a call at the port, the crew of Marella Discovery joined local high school students to carry out a social responsibility project, which began with them picking up litter and debris from Giritli Teyze Beach.

The students were also taken to the port, where they were given an introduction to the marina and customs-free and customs-controlled areas, as well as an insight into the key operations handled by passport and customs authorities. They were then given a tour of Marella Discovery and visited the dock to speak with the pilot captains to find out more about their work.

“This event not only supports the coastal environment but also provides students with insight into various roles and a tour of Marella Discovery,” said Olivia Wells, sustainability manager at Marella Cruises. “We look forward to many more community activities like this in Bodrum in the future.”

The students and the Marella team also received a presentation on the sea ambulance ‘Yaşam’ and emergency response operations at sea from Atilla Suyolcu, president of Bodrum Sea Rescue, a non-governmental organisation providing free maritime rescue services in Turkey.

“We thank Marella Discovery Captain and team for their partnership and commitment on educating the future generation on maritime and environmental stewardship,” said Aziz Güngör, regional director of East Mediterranean at Global Ports Holding, which operates the port. “As Global Ports Holding and all its ports around the world, we are dedicated to fostering a sustainable future for both our industry and protecting our oceans by engaging future generations and enhancing their awareness of maritime operations and conservation.”
