Norwegian Cruise Line has marked the one-year anniversary of Norwegian Breakaway, which launched in New York City on 8 May 2013.

Since she was christened by The Rockettes last year, Norwegian Breakaway has carried nearly 250,000 guests from the city to destinations in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Florida and the Caribbean.

“Norwegian Breakaway has been hailed as a game-changer with in the cruise industry and we are so proud to celebrate this spectacular ship’s first year sailing from New York,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s CEO. “The world-class dining, exciting amenities and high-calibre Broadway entertainment onboard are all an extension of the incredible activities this great city has to offer. Norwegian Breakaway is truly New York’s ship and we invite those who haven’t yet had the opportunity to sail on her to come join us on a future voyage.”

This year, Norwegian Breakaway and various other cruise ships have helped to generate US$229 million and a 16% increase in guest and crew spending in the city.

“We congratulate Norwegian on Norwegian Breakaway’s one year anniversary sailing out of New York City, contributing to an industry that plays a critical role in New York City’s economy,” said Kyle Kimball, president of New York City Economic Development Corporation. “The city’s cruise operations supports thousands of jobs and is key to the city’s robust tourism and hospitality industry, and Norwegian Breakaway has been a valuable member of the city’s fleet.”

As part of her 2014 summer season, Norwegian Breakaway has already embarked on the second of 22 weekly cruises to Bermuda. Offered until the end of September, the itinerary includes three days in port at King’s Wharf, Bermuda. For the first time, guests will also be able to visit the onboard casino from 9pm each night while the ship is docked in King’s Wharf.

Featuring hull art designed by Peter Max, Norwegian Breakaway features 29 dining options including restaurants from Food Network Star and Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian and star of TLC’s ‘Cake Boss’ Buddy Valastro. In addition, the ship has an ice bar; three Broadway shows; a weekly fireworks show; an Aqua Park with five water slides and a ropes course at sea.
