Brunvoll is to provide azimuth propulsion units and control systems for Fjord1’s two new ferries, which will operate on the Stranda-Liabygda and Eidsdal-Linge routes in Norway.

Currently under construction at Tersan Shipyard in Yalova, Turkey, the double-ended ferries will have battery propulsion, which can be charged quickly from shore. The ferries, which were designed by HAV Design, they will also be able to operate on diesel-electric back-up systems.

“This once again confirms our position as a preferred partner for modern eco-friendly ferries,” said Bernt Rune Riksfjord, Brunvoll’s sales manager for shuttle ferries. “Brunvoll’s azimuth propulsion thrusters designed for high operational efficiency and low energy consumption, together with our in-house hydrodynamics capabilities, enables us to provide units highly optimised for these vessels.”

The ferries will be the first vessels equipped with Brunvoll’s new auto-crossing system, as well as a condition-monitoring system, enabling autonomous operation of the ferry.

“Brunvoll has invested significantly into developing autonomous solutions and we are very excited about these two new vessels,” said Knut Andresen, executive vice president of product development and engineering at Brunvoll. “Our propulsion and manoeuvring units support most motor technologies, but we see that electrical are increasingly popular, often driven by the use of batteries or hybrid energy sources.”
