International classification society Bureau Veritas has launched a web-based system on its Veristar Info website to enable shipowners to reduce certification time for the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006.
Operators need to work with their flag states to create a Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance (DMLC) Part I. They then need to prepare a DMLC Part II document for each ship, which is based on the flag state’s requirements and is specific to each ship. The DMLC Part II must be reviewed and certified by a recognised organisation (RO) like Bureau Veritas.
“Shipowners have to have MLC documentation in place which is certified by an RO before 20 August 2013 or risk detention of their vessels,” said Boris Gruden, MLC implementation leader for Bureau Veritas. “We have built a system to automate the process for the owner and to speed review.”
