Florida’s Port Canaveral has started construction work on a new US$50.5 million cruise terminal complex with a 1,400 ft berth and a 1,000-vehicle parking facility.
Port commissioners approved plans for the 185,000 sq ft Cruise Terminal 1 in November 2013, appointing local firm Ivey’s Construction of Merritt Island to build the facility.
The two-storey complex will have the capacity to handle 6,000-passenger vessels and is the first cruise terminal to be located on the south side of Canaveral harbour in the Cove restaurant and retail area. This will provide passengers and crew with easy access to dining and entertainment venues when visiting the port. Details regarding the terminal’s tenants are to be released soon.
A larger recreational boat ramp complex will be built to the west of Jetty Park at the channel’s entrance to accommodate the new terminal.
Cruise Terminal 1 is scheduled to open in November 2014.
