Carnival Corporation’s brands, Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, made “remarkable strides” to reduce their environmental footprint and promote sustainability in 2024.
“Our commitment to environmental stewardship is unwavering,” said Bonnie Westlund, the community relations director for Holland America Line - Princess for Alaska and the Yukon. “We are dedicated to implementing sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and the communities we serve.”
Carnival Corporation’s tour company replaced eight regular-sized buses with four double-deckers in order to reduce road trips, congestion and emissions in Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. From June to August 2024, 400 fewer trips were made compared to the same period in 2023.
Holland America Line and Princess Cruises also used recycling, food biodigesters, glass crushers and composting schemes at hotels to save more than 760,000 pounds of waste materials from ending up in Alaskan landfill sites. The brands also diverted furniture and linens from landfill for use in local communities.

Carnival Cruise Line donated $50,000 to the Alaska Carbon Reduction Fund, which installs heat pumps in the homes of low-income families in an effort to reduce their heating costs, as well as the environmental impact. The donation will go towards expanding the programme to more homes in Ketchikan, a city on Revillagigedo Island.

Carnival Corporation also established partnerships with pig farmers from Skagway to Fairbanks to donate food waste from guest plates, employee dining rooms and prep kitchens to feed the animals. Over 83,000 pounds of food waste was sent to these pig farmers and kept out of landfills.
“Carnival Corporation, along with Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line, remains committed to fostering sustainable practices and supporting the communities where we work and live,” said Westlund. “We look forward to continuing these efforts in 2025 and beyond, ensuring that their presence in Alaska brings joy to guests and leaves a positive, lasting impact on the environment and local communities.”
Following a successful 2024 Alaska season, Holland America Line has pledged to invest $70 million between 2025 and 2027 to expand cruise guest capacity and “elevate” its Denali Lodge experience and its Alaskan Cruisetours. “It’s truly special that we can bring guests to a lodge at the doorstep of Denali National Park,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of Holland America Line. “This investment is a win for Alaska, our guests and Holland America Line. Enhancing and expanding the Holland America Denali Lodge will help meet the growing interest in combined land and sea Cruisetours for our 49th state and further support the Alaska tourism industry.”
