Carnival Cruise Lines has released additional design details of its US $155 million refurbishment project that will transform Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine during a 49-day dry dock at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy.

The company’s largest and most comprehensive refurbishment project will incorporate all of the elements of Carnival’s US $500 million Fun Ship 2.0 enhancement programme, as well as other highlights exclusive to Carnival Sunshine.

The Fun Ship 2.0 elements will encompass dining venues such as Guy’s Burger Joint; a Mexican eatery BlueIguana Cantina; the RedFrog Pub; the poolside RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar and the EA SPORTS Bar. The vessel will also feature Carnival’s largest Serenity adult-only retreat, the SportsSquare, which includes a new zip line feature and many entertainment venues.

One of the new highlights unique to Carnival Sunshine is a racing-themed aqua park featuring forty different interactive water features, as well as the new Speedway Splash, two adjacent 235ft slides which display racing times on a scoreboard. The WaterWorks park also hosts Carnival’s longest enclosed Twister slide at 334ft in length, which includes a crystal clear turn extending out over the edge of the ship and offers views of the ocean throughout the ride.

Other highlights include a full-service Asian restaurant offering various Asian specialities cooked in an open kitchen, Pizzeria del Capitano, an expansion of the line’s Cucina del Capitano family-style Italian restaurant and JavaBlue Café, which serves caffeinated drinks in an island-themed atmosphere. Carnival Sunshine will also debut Shake Spot, where guests can enjoy hand-crafted milkshakes, tropical fruit shakes and even alcoholic shakes, as well as Havana Bar, which serves coffee and Caribbean cocktails in a Cuban-style courtyard with Latin music and dancing.

Carnival is celebrating the extensive transformation of Carnival Destiny into Carnival Sunshine with the ‘Bring Home Some Sunshine and Win’ contest on its Facebook page, which allows one guest to win a free Carnival Sunshine cruise for submitting ‘before and after’ photos of a space they have transformed themselves by incorporating ‘sunshine’.

Carnival Sunshine will re-enter service in April 2013 and debut with a series of inaugural Mediterranean cruises which begin on 12 April 2013, before sailing on a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing from Barcelona to New Orleans on 1 November and embarking on its year-round Caribbean itineraries.
