Engineering firm Cavotec is to install and maintain its automated mooring system – named MoorMaster – at e-ferry ports across Norway.
Following its stated aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 40%, Norway has introduced multiple electrically powered ferries (e-ferries) and hybrid vessels, many of which will now use Cavotec’s automated charging interface and vacuum-based automated mooring technology. Designed to eliminate the need for conventional mooring lines, the MoorMaster system uses remote-controlled vacuum pads on the quayside to moor and release e-ferries in a matter of seconds, while reducing noise and emissions.
“MoorMaster is ideal for e-ferry applications because the units keep vessels in pre-programmed positions to maximise the amount of time available to charge ship battery units,” said Sofus Gedde-Dahl, sales director for e-ferries at Cavotec. “The technology also reduces overall capital expenditure for operators, and delivers substantial operational and safety benefits.”
When it completes the new projects, Cavotec will have equipped more than 40 e-ferry ports in Scandinavia with MoorMaster.
“These projects demonstrate the unrivalled suitability of MoorMaster for e-ferry applications, and the importance of the technology for this rapidly growing segment in Norway and beyond,” said Gustavo Miller, president of Cavotec’s Ports and Maritime Division.
