Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has commended the enforcement of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006.

The MLC, 2006 provides additional employment rights for seafarers, ensuring they have a right to fair wages, hours, medical care, annual and shore leave, accommodation and more.

“We welcome the entry into force of the MLC and our member lines are committed to fostering safe, professionally rewarding and enjoyable work environments onboard their ships,” said Christine Duffy, president and CEO of CLIA. “CLIA and its members strongly support robust worker protections for crew members.”

In addition to ILO and International Maritime Organization regulations, all CLIA members must comply with all international regulatory requirements governing the safety, security and fair treatment of seafarers.

Members have previously adopted the Shipboard Workplace Code of Conduct, which compels employers to maintain a safe working environment for crew members, enabling them to raise complaints or issues without fear of retaliation or retribution.
