While sailing from Haugesund, Norway to Southampton, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines' Balmoral successfully arranged an evacuation by helicopter for a patient who had suffered from a stroke on the morning of 23 May.

The Netherlands Coast Guard carried out the evacuation, which took place in dangerous conditions due to high winds of 30-35 knots 80 nautical miles from the British coast.

Balmoral Captain Robert Bamberg told International Cruise & Ferry Review: "I was called by the ship's doctor shortly after 9.30 am. He advised me that a patient had had a stroke and that a medical evacuation was needed." Bamberg initially contacted Yarmouth Coast Guard in the UK to ask for assistance but, due to the ship's position, the Netherlands Coast Guard was asked to take over the operation.

"We followed our procedures onboard for safe evacuation," said Bamberg. "Approximately 40 people were involved in the operation, including the medical and stretcher team, fire groups, the engine control team and security." Passengers were kept informed of the situation, which required the ship to slow to 10 knots and change course to head into the wind for easier access by the helicopter. No passengers were allowed on deck or on cabin balconies until the rescue was completed.

On arrival, the helicopter put down a paramedic, who assessed the patient and interviewed the ship's doctor about her condition before she was moved to a Dutch hospital for treatment.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is always prepared for events of this nature, said Bamberg. "Safety is our number one priority so we have very strict procedures onboard. You can't negotiate with safety."
