Concordia lifting still underway

Technicians are making steady progress refloating the wreck of Costa Concordia, which is now expected to be towed away from Giglio tomorrow.

Despite strong overnight winds, the wreck has now been successfully lifted around 11 metres off the undersea platform from where it has been resting for the last two-and-a-half years. Divers have also nearly succeeded in getting the starboard sponson S4 in position, and they are now in the process of lowering sponsons S5 and S14.

It was originally planned that the wreck would be towed today, but adverse weather and sea conditions have pushed back the schedule by a day. It is now hoped that on 22 July, transported by a convoy of 14 vessels led by Resolve Earl and ITC Blizzard, Concordia will begin her journey to Genoa.
