Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam officially kicked off the construction of the line’s new hybrid-powered expedition ship, Roald Amundsen, at Kleven yards in Norway on 24 February.
To be launched in 2018, will be the world’s first expedition cruise ship powered by hybrid battery technology. The first steel section will become one of Roald Amundsen’s main engine compartments.
“Today is a historical day not only for Hurtigruten, but for the global maritime industry,” said Skjeldam. “We celebrate the construction start of the first ship in a new generation that will change expedition travel forever.”
Designed as the first of Hurtigruten’s new class of exploration ships purpose-built to sail in polar waters and along the Norwegian coast, Roald Amundsen will be joined by sister Fridtjof Nansen.
Both ships will have strengthened hulls for traversing ice and feature Scandinavian designs inspired by nature, as well as large observation platforms on several decks, three restaurants and a pool deck with infinity pools, Jacuzzis and bars. Guests will be accommodated in 265 cabins, the majority of which will have their own balcony and a small number of which will be suites.
Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen will both be equipped with hybrid technology to enable them to sail with electric propulsion for 15-30 minutes. This technology, combined with the hull shape and effective use of onboard electricity, will decrease fuel consumption by 20% and reduce the ships’ carbon dioxide emissions. In total, the two new ships will eliminate 6,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emission per year compared to traditional ships.
“Sustainability will be the core of every detail of the ship and the onboard operation,” said Skjeldam. “The hybrid engines will reduce fuel consumption substantially and allow for periods of completely emission-free sailing. With a number of other ground-breaking technical solutions throughout the ship, Roald Amundsen will be the most advanced and environmental friendly expedition ship ever built.”
Roald Amundsen’s 2018-2019 inaugural season will include expedition voyages to Antarctica and the Chilean fjords.
