Copenhagen Malmo Port (CMP) and Scandinavian Tank Storage (STS) have jointly financed a dedicated bunkering quay and terminal in the port of Malmo in Sweden.
The facility will be developed to enable vessels to bunker with the new 0.1% sulphur fuel when sailing in the emissions control areas in the region. All fuel will be supplied by Statoil.
“Our assessment is that 170 of our customer’s vessels will fuel here each year, which in theory, is one vessel every other day,” said Johan Rostin, CEO of CMP. “The blend of oils is essential for it to be able to function as it should in the vessel. So we feel secure in having Statoil, which provides fuel of a recognised high quality, as supplier.”
Vessels can also meet the new sulphur limits by installing gas exhaust cleaning systems – known as scrubbers – however this process creates hazardous waste, which must be handled onshore.
