The Port of Cork is set to welcome 21 cruise vessels and 30,000 passengers in August, marking its busiest month to date.
In August, the port will handle three ships in one day and two cruise liners a day on five other occasions.
“It will be all hands on deck for the month of August as we get set to welcome 21 liners to our port, which highlights that the port is able to manage more than one cruise vessel at a time,” said Captain Michael McCarthy, commercial manager at the Port of Cork. “We are partnering with the cruise lines to deliver up to 100,000 cruise passengers and crew yearly and it’s up to the city, county, tourism groups and retailers to ensure they are looked after when they get here. There is a substantial economic spin-off for the region, which should be capitalised on as the estimated direct spend into the economy is over €2 million in August alone.”
Cork is scheduled to receive 62 cruise ships in 2013 and has initiated a targeted marketing and commercial campaign to secure cruise bookings for 2014, 2015 and 2016.
