Costa Cruises has collaborated with the Italian Coast Guard to develop mooring training courses for its officers, which will help to improve berthing operations.
Developed with the support of Savona’s Coast Guard and advocated by its former captain Enrico Moretti, the training programme has been approved by the coast guard’s new captain Vincenzo Vitale.
The first of the training sessions was held last June and included a part-theoretical and part-practical course conducted by Frigate Captain Leonardo Deri at the Savona Coast Guard’s headquarters. Officers also attended a session onboard Costa Favolosa and one on a tugboat sailing in Savona harbour.
Each of the sessions was held by experts from Costa’s Campus and Marine and Nautical teams, as well as guest instructors from Savona harbour’s technical nautical team. Experts from the mooring group, the concessionary company dealing with the towing service and the harbour’s pilots, also presented during the training sessions.
A second session will take place in mid-October, enabling officers to practice mooring procedures and learn new techniques related to the ships, the crew, the tugboats and the harbour’s pilots.
