More than two million passengers passed through Portsmouth International Port in the UK in 2016, a 3% increase from the 1.98 million who visited in 2015.
Portsmouth International Port hosts both cruise ships and regular passenger ferry services to destinations in Continental Europe.
Brittany Ferries, which has a base in Portsmouth, recorded a ten-year high for the number of passengers crossing to France in 2016. There was a 31% year-on-year increase in the number of people using the Cherbourg route. Statistics show that the number of people sailing from Portsmouth to Bilbao in Northern Spain via Brittany Ferries also rose by 7.6%, while those travelling with the line to Santander grew 4.3%.
“More than two million passengers have voted with their feet, cars and lorries and chosen Portsmouth for their journey to France, Spain or the Channel Islands in the last year,” said Mike Sellers, port director at Portsmouth International Port. “It is an impressive milestone and a sign that investment in new facilities and the ease of access to the port are keeping Portsmouth ahead of our competition as the customers’ choice.”
