Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) is to rename its new ship Vasco da Gama when she joins the fleet in April 2019.
Currently sailing as P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Eden, the vessel will be named in honour of Portuguese nobleman, navigator and explorer Vasco de Gama, who was famous for being the first European to reach India by sea in May 1498. The name was chosen by CMV’s Columbus Club members and trade partners.
“We are grateful to all those Columbus Club members and trade partners who took the time and trouble to vote,” said Christian Verhounig, CEO and chairman of CMV. “From the thousands received, the winner is Vasco da Gama with 46% of the total vote.”
Vasco de Gama will be dedicated to both the German and Australasian cruise markets when she joins CMV’s fleet. During the northern summer (May-October) the ship will operate under CMV’s German brand, Transocean Kreuzfahrten, and will homeport in Bremerhaven and Kiel. In the Australian summer season (December-March), the ship will be based in Fremantle, Perth and Adelaide.
The vessel will begin her maiden voyage for CMV on 24 April 2019, departing from Singapore and spending 46 nights visiting South East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Egypt, Jordan, the Suez Canal, Israel, various Mediterranean destinations, London Tilbury in the UK and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The journey will conclude in Bremerhaven.
