Crystal Cruises has reduced costs, improved operational efficiency and increased employee collaboration after deploying Microsoft Lync 2013 with the help of Modality Systems in August 2013.

Modality Systems designed and deployed a communications systems based on Lync 2013 across Crystal’s organisation and two cruise ships, providing users with audio, video, messaging and data collaboration services.

“The technology we deploy performs a significant role in our activities, acting as an invisible facilitator of vital communications and interactions between staff, suppliers and our customers,” said Bjorn Andersson, Crystal’s manager of shipboard and network operations.“The Modality team designed a solution, which they rolled out across the business, including our cruise ships on the other side of the world, without any fuss or the need to visit site in the case of the global locations and ships.”

Replacing the existing teleconferencing facilities, Lync 2013 enables Crystal’s team members to initiate or schedule meetings across the organisation, which has reduced travel costs and saved around US$11 thousand since 2012. The system also provides the business with a cost-effective method for informing federated suppliers and key affiliates about regular business and training updates.

Crew members working onboard Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony can also access the same benefits as their shore based colleagues, with features such as presence and instant messaging enabling efficient ship-to-shore and ship-to-ship communications. This has improved operational processes and the line’s customer service model.
