Thomson Cruises and Island Cruises, part of TUI UK & Ireland, has appointed Columbia Ship Management (CSM) as its technical management partner for Thomson Celebration, Thomson Dream and Island Escape.
Effective from November 2014, the five-year contract includes the development of a joint governance committee that will manage all aspects of the operations and financial processes, while ensuring full transparency between the two parties.
As part of the contact, Thomson Cruises will employ its captains and chief engineers directly, enabling the company to play a role in managing onboard operations, rather than relying on the ship management company, as is usually the case. An independent safety consultant from the wider industry will also be appointed to advise Thomson Cruises on the best industry practices.
CSM, which has worked with Thomson Cruises and Island Cruises for more than ten years, will also develop a detailed service level agreement to outline how the companies will operate to standards of excellence.
“Over the past 18 months our teams have worked together to develop an innovative governance structure that brings shipowners and managers closer together in a more collaborative partnership,” said Helen Caron, managing director of Thomson Cruises and Island Cruises. “I firmly believe that CSM is the right partner to ensure that we continue to drive the highest operational, safety and environmental standards – a key part of our plans as we enhance the fleet going forward.”
Thomson Cruises’ two chartered ships – Thomson Majesty and Thomson Spirit – will not be covered by the contract, however some innovations will also be rolled out on these ships.
