Trimline's multi-million pound refit for Windstar
Design-build benefits

Southampton-based interior outfitters, Trimline Interiors has been involved in the recent multi-million pound Windstar Cruises’ renovation project after winning the tender to update the line’s fleet, while at the same time maintaining the casual elegance that sets them apart for many others. The teak-decked yachts are renowned for their intimate settings, which parallel the nature of the small ports they sail into. But even classic style requires the occasional update. Trimline Interiors has been working on projects for all three Windstar yachts adding dark wood shutters to complement the nautical style, wood effect Amtico flooring for contemporary but practical walkways, LED lighting, using natural fabrics and quality furnishings.

Working on a design-build basis meant working directly with Trimline Interiors choice of designer to ensure continuity of style and a good relationship with suppliers so that both brand consistency and the price reduction associated with a three-yacht deal were achieved.

Trimline sales and marketing director Mike Oliver says: “We are extremely happy with the work we have completed on the Windstar fleet and have enjoyed working on a design and build project as it allowed us to give greater continuity to Windstar Cruises, alongside a more cost effective programme.”

The interiors outfitter deployed around 150 staff for the Wind Star and Wind Spirit refits – completed in April and May respectively – who made sure the refit was completed to the highest standard as the yachts followed each other across the Atlantic. This involved the company having around 3,700 m2 of carpets ready for refit, all parts ready to go at the correct shipyard, while ensuring containers were available for the old furnishings and materials, due to limited onboard storage. Overlapping teams worked on the two vessels simultaneously, allowing Wind Star and Wind Spirit to be completed within seven days of each other.

“After winning the rigorous international tender process, I am pleased to be working with Trimline,” Windstar Cruises CEO and president Hanz Birkholz says: “This unique approach has enabled Windstar to shorten communication channels and save a lot of time working towards a mature design and specification which, of course, is the key to a successful project.”

Windstar Cruises wants their customers to feel that they are onboard a private yacht and for this to be reflected in the vessels’ interiors. Trimline delivered by working with both the Windstar team, the designer chosen by Trimline Interiors, and their own Southampton team, so that every interiors aspect is consistent with the style of the yachts. Final stages are due to be completed on the public rooms of Wind Surf and Wind Spirit during November and December 2012, when both yachts are in Lisbon and continuing as they set sail for the Caribbean.
