Elomatic, Deltamarin and Germany-based shipyard MV Werften have signed a tri-party engineering contract to design a Global Class cruise ship for Asian operator Star Cruises.

Star Cruises’ 340m, 200,001gt newbuild will be the largest passenger ship ever built in Germany and one of the largest-ever built worldwide. The project will last almost four years and the vessel is expected to be delivered to Star Cruises in 2020.

Finland-based companies Elomatic and Deltamarin will deliver engineering services during the basic and detail design phases and will assist MV Werften with technical sites services during the construction.

“This is a very significant project for us and shows that our expertise in passenger ship design is highly valued internationally,” said Mika Laurilehto, Deltamarin’s managing director. “It will have a long-term positive effect on employment at Deltamarin and we look forward to delivering the high quality technical expert services that such a vessel requires.”

The contract is the largest in both Elomatic’s and Deltamarin’s histories and represents a total of 860 man-years.

“We are very proud that MV Werften has chosen us as a strategic partner and that they have shown faith in us to design passenger vessels of the highest quality,” said Patrik Rautaheimo, Elomatic CEO. “These kinds of demanding projects allow us to showcase our top know-how in this area.”
