Emerging Markets Communications has completed its acquisition of MTN Communications, merging both companies’ satellite and terrestrial communications operations.

Operating as EMC from MTN’s Miramar headquarters in Florida, US, the combined entity is now one of the largest independent providers of satellite connectivity services with 35 years of experience in delivering connectivity and content to the world’s most remote locations.

The EMC global mobility platform uses a hybrid satellite and terrestrial broadband network, providing the company’s sea-, air- and land-based customers with access to live worldwide TV services, on-demand video content, the internet, voice, cellular and 3G services.

“Customers can clearly distinguish EMC from other providers in three ways – our truly global services for mobility and fixed applications, our differentiated products and technologies, and our unique worldwide customer support,” said Abel Avellan, founder and CEO of EMC. “We are excited to leverage synergies, and complementary products and services, for our distinct markets to further expand modern connectivity to remote locations at sea, on land and in the air.”

The new entity provides remote connectivity for 1,600 vessels and more than 8,000 land-based customer sites in multiple verticals, and is the largest consumer of satellite capacity outside the US and Europe.

“We are excited to add the cruise, ferry and yacht markets to our targeted sectors, and will be merging our government, oil and gas, and commercial shipping business units to continue to deliver our recognised reliable service and support,” said Avellan.
