Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) is to undergo a S$40 million (US $759,500) overhaul, which will enable it to handle dual ship calls and more passengers.
The project, which is set to last nine months, will start in the first quarter of this year and marks the most extensive infrastructure upgrade at MBCCS since it opened in 2012.
Once complete, the cruise centre will feature additional lounge facilities, bigger seating areas for embarkation and disembarkation, and more check-in stations. This will enable MBCCS to provide dedicated check-in facilities for two ships during dual calls, increasing its capacity to handle 11,700 passengers (up from the 6,800 it can currently accommodate).
In addition, the vacant land in front of MBCCS will be converted into a large ground transport area with extra coach bays and more than double the number of ride-hailing spaces. Part of Marina Coastal Drive will also be widened to “significantly improve” access to and from the terminal.
The upgrades will be carried out in phases to enable MBCCS to remain operational during ship calls. The project will be spearheaded by SATS-Creuers Cruise Services (SATS-Creuers), which has been operating MBCCS since 21 May 2012.
“This terminal refresh underscores our intent to make MBCCS one of the best stopovers for cruise ship passengers,” said Bob Chi, chairman of SATS-Creuers. “The upgrade is timely as the facility gears up for more intensive operations in the future, including welcoming two mega cruise ships on dual operation. The upgrade will deliver a better visitor experience while improving efficiency for cruise ship operators.”
Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has also extended SATS-Creuers’ operator agreement for MBCCS for eight years, with the option for an additional two years.
“Singapore’s cruise industry is projected to grow steadily with year-round sailings, seasonal homeporting, and a robust calendar of transit calls from a diverse range of international cruise lines,” said Ong Huey Hong, assistant chief executive of STB’s industry development group. “Recognising the global trend towards larger ships, STB is collaborating with SATS-Creuers to enhance MBCCS. These improvements will solidify Singapore’s position as a leading cruise hub, offering world-class facilities that cater to the evolving needs of cruise lines and passengers.”
