Canadian East Coast ferry and terminal operator Marine Atlantic has joined Green Marine, the largest voluntary environmental programme for the maritime industry in North America.

Green Marine, which has been established for six years, encourages its participants – shipowners, ports, terminals and shipyards – to go beyond regulatory requirements to improve their environmental performance and sustainability.

Marine Atlantic is the third ferry operator to join Green Marine and will enter four of its ships and three terminals – located in Argentia, Port aux Basques and North Sydney – into the programme.

“At Marine Atlantic, we are committed to conducting our service in an environmentally responsible manner,” said Paul Griffin, president and CEO of Marine Atlantic. “We have already made significant investments in new infrastructure and technologies that show our commitment to the environment.”

Griffin added: “Our new terminal building in North Sydney scheduled to open this spring will be LEED certified, a leader in environmental and energy efficient design. Joining Green Marine will provide us with another window of opportunity to measure and showcase our environmental performance, while working with others in the marine industry to continue improving into the future.”
