Fincantieri cut the first piece of steel for Holland America Line’s (HAL) Nieuw Statendam during a ceremony at its Palermo yard in Sicily, Italy on 12 July.

Although the first block of steel will be built in Palermo, it will later be moved to Fincantieri’s Marghera yard where the ship will be constructed.

Due for delivery in November 2018, the 99,500gt Nieuw Statendam will be the 15th ship in the HAL fleet and the second in its Pinnacle Class alongside Koningsdam, which debuted in April 2016. The 2,650-guest newbuild will also feature enhanced Pinnacle Class amenities and innovations.

“This is an exciting time for Holland America Line, and Nieuw Statendam’s steel cutting is a milestone that signifies our continued growth and evolution as a company and a brand,” said Orlando Ashford, HAL president. “With Pinnacle Class we have been able to try new things, expand our horizons and push boundaries, and while Nieuw Statendam is a sister to Koningsdam, we do have some new ideas that will be revealed in time.”
