Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has signed a deal worth more than €2 billion ($2.2 billion) to design and build two new cruise ships for Carnival Corporation brand AIDA Cruises.

The order marks the first ships that Fincantieri will build for AIDA, but it has previously constructed 75 cruise vessels for other lines belonging to Carnival Corporation, most recently including Princess Cruises’ Star Princess.

The first AIDA ship is scheduled for delivery in early 2030 and the second for late 2031. Each will feature 2,100 guest cabins and be equipped with multi-fuel engines that will be capable of operating with LNG, bio-diesel and other fuels.

“We are honoured that our longstanding partner Carnival Corporation has selected Fincantieri to build ships for AIDA Cruises for the first time in our history,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and managing director of Fincantieri. “This milestone confirms our ability to serve the entire Carnival Corporation portfolio, while ensuring long-term visibility for our shipyards. These new ships will embody the most advanced technologies for sustainability and efficiency, further strengthening Fincanteri’s and Carnival Corporation’s roles as leaders in cruise industry innovation.”
