Finnish naval architecture and marine engineering company Foreship has produced a five-step guide for shipowners who want to implement batteries and fuel cells onboard their vessels.
According to the infographic, shipowners should start by outlining their vessel's operational profile and analysing the benefits of batteries, before carrying out feasibility studies and risk evaluations. Next, they should produce a basic design, seek class approval and work out an installation schedule. After this, shipowners will be ready to move into the detailed design and installation and commissioning stages.
Foreship's infographic also highlights the many potential benefits of using batteries to power vessels. They include up to 15% fuel savings, 30% lower maintenance costs and 50% carbon dioxide emissions reduction over the ship's lifetime compared to traditional marine diesel oil.
