Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest newbuild Norwegian Getaway arrived in her new Miami homeport on 6 February.
The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders will christen the ship during a ceremony on 7 February, which will feature performances from music artist Pitbull, Latin Grammy Award-winner Nestor Torres and Dancing with the Stars host Brooke Burke-Charvet.
“It’s so exciting for us to bring this spectacular new ship to Miami, our company’s home and where we started the modern cruising industry almost 50 years ago,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s CEO. “Norwegian Getaway is a reflection of the energy, excitement and tropical location of this beautiful city and we’re so glad she’s home.”
Getaway, sister ship to the recently launched Norwegian Breakaway, will homeport in Miami and will feature hull artwork by local artist David LeBatard. The ship will offer 26 dining venues, interactive Nickelodeon entertainment and the industry’s first GrammyExperience and The Illusionarium dining and entertainment experience. She will also have 678 Ocean Place and The Waterfront venues and a three-storey Sports Complex featuring the Aqua Park with five water slides, two swimming pools and a multilevel, elevated ropes course with 40 different elements.
The ship will sail seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises departing every Saturday from Miami beginning on 8 February 2014.
“PortMiami is pleased to welcome the Norwegian Getaway, the first Miami-themed cruise vessel, to our fleet,” said PortMiami director Bill Johnson. “Our port is proud to be known worldwide as the ‘Cruise Capital of the World’ and Norwegian Getaway is without question a world class addition to our roster of cruise ships.”
Norwegian has deployed ships in PortMiami since the company was launched in 1966. Four of the line’s ships currently sail from the port including Norwegian Epic, the line’s largest vessel carrying more than 4,100 guests. Norwegian Sky has been sailing three and four-day itineraries to the Bahamas year-round from Miami since 2007.
