Adam Goldstein, president and COO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, has been appointed as the chair of the Cruise Lines International Association’s CLIA) board of directors.

Goldstein will replace current chairman Howard Frank, also chair of Costa Cruises, on 1 January. Frank, who has served as chairman of CLIA since 2010 helped to implement the association’s global ‘One Industry, One Voice’ structure and develop the Executive Partner Membership programme.

“The cruise industry today is a global industry, and under Howard’s leadership CLIA became a world-class global association,” said Goldstein. “I’m honoured to take on this new role and I look forward to continuing Howard’s vision of a unified industry working together to ensure the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, while encouraging a larger share of leisure travellers to consider the exceptional vacation experience that taking a cruise offers.”

CLIA has also revealed several other changes to its top management structure at its Leadership Forum in Miami.

Airline and travel executive Raphael von Heereman is to replace Andy Harmer as the secretary general of CLIA Europe from 15 February 2015. Meanwhile, Marco Ferraz, director of tour operator Monark, has been appointed as secretary general of CLIA-ABREMAR effective from 1 December.

“Raphael’s wealth of international experience and deep understanding of regulatory affairs will be a powerful asset for CLIA members,” said Christine Duffy, president and CEO of CLIA. “In addition to his tourism industry experience, Marco has valuable skills in communications, government relations, and engaging and leading multiple stakeholders.”

In addition, Alison Powers has joined CLIA as director of research, bringing in-depth professional experience in research and the travel industry. CLIA members will help guide the association’s research strategy via a newly-established CLIA Research Committee.

“The new research function that Alison leads will support all of CLIA’s efforts and bring additional value to our members as we promote the value of cruising, advocate for legal and regulatory environments that facilitate further growth, and tell the positive story of our industry through evidence-based research,” said Duffy.

Didier Scaillet, vice president for business development, will transition out of his role with CLIA at the end of the year.
