Green Tech Marine (GTM) is to install scrubbers in the engines onboard Norwegian Cruises Line’s (NCL) two Breakaway Plus-class vessels, which will be delivered by Meyer Werft shipyard in 2015 and 2017.

The company will supply one smaller scrubber for each of the five engines onboard the ships, instead a large multi-inlet scrubber serving several engines. The engines range from 14.4 to 16.8 megawatts, making the installation the largest scrubber plant in the world with a total engine power of 76.8 MW.

GTM’s scrubbers will ensure the ships comply with the 0.1 per cent sulphur limit in emission control areas, which will be introduced in 2015.

The GTM-R scrubbers will also replace the silencers, while their compact size will minimise the impact on cabin space and other service areas.

“Norwegian has a history of innovation along with a commitment to using green technology whenever possible,” said Kevin Sheehan, CEO of NCL. “Installing scrubbers from GTM on our new Breakaway Plus vessels is a smart decision and one that will ensure these ships are as eco-friendly as possible.”

GTM installed scrubbers on NCL’s Pride of America during its drydock period in March, which sails year-round in Hawaii. The scrubbers are scheduled to be fully operational later this year.
