Holland America Line (HAL) is to name its second Pinnacle Class ship Nieuw Statendam when she launches in autumn 2018.
Nieuw Statendam will be the sixth HAL ship to bear the name Statendam. The first debuted in 1898 and sailed until 1911, the second was built in 1910 for HAL but was sold to White Star Line as Justicia before entering service, and the third was operational between 1929 and 1940. The fourth Statendam launched in 1957 and sailed HAL’s first World Cruise before being sold to Paquet Cruises in 1982, while the fifth was part of the HAL fleet from 1993 to 2015 when she was transferred to sister cruise line P&O Cruises Australia, where she sails as Pacific Eden.
“Holland America Line is writing the next chapter in our evolving story, yet we are a company with a deep history, and the name Nieuw Statendam perfectly blends our past, present and future,” said Orlando Ashford, HAL’s president. “The previous Statendam ships have been among the most beloved in our history, and we eagerly anticipate sharing this beautiful new ship with our guests in 2018.”
To be built at Fincantieri’s Marghera yard in Italy starting this summer, the 99,500gt Nieuw Statendam will accommodate 2,650 guests and offer new venues and several of the innovations that have just debuted on her sister ship Koningsdam.
Renowned hospitality designer Adam D. Tihany's designs will be featured on Nieuw Statendam, just as on Koningsdam. Several public areas will be designed by Bjorn Storbraaten, who successfully worked with HAL on Koningsdam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam.
