Heraklion set for busy year

Heraklion Port Authority is set to handle 24% more cruise ship arrivals than last year, after opening its season with an inaugural call from MSC Cruises MSC Fantasia on 11 January.

To cater for the expected increase in cruise traffic, Heraklion Port Authority has upgraded the visitor facilities at the terminal. As part of its ‘Customer Experience Enhancement Program’ project, the port authority has installed two interactive systems to provide visitors with additional information about the island. Developed in Crete, the ‘Infocloud’ system offers cruise visitors information on various aspects of the history, nature and culture of Crete. A kinaesthetic game, which can be used by one or more players, enables visitors to ‘collect’ traditional Cretan products by moving in front of an interactive wall.

In addition, cruise passengers can visit the port’s ‘Herbs’ project, which was developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Heraklion and Crete’s Chefs Club. As passengers walk to the port’s exit, they can see various species of Crete’s indigenous plants and herbs and learn about how locals have used the plants in cooking, beverages, medicine and cosmetics.
