Holland America Line (HAL) has joined with Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands to showcase reproductions of famous Dutch artwork onboard its cruise ships.

Created by Rijksstudio, the ‘Rijksmuseum at Sea’ collection will comprise reproductions of some of the museum’s most famous masterpieces, which will be showcased throughout the ships. Guests will also be able to participate in guided art workshops in a dedicated art space, view videos about the museum and its collections via the TVs in their cabins, and purchase Rijksmuseum merchandise in the onboard shops. Rijksmuseum staff will also be sailing on select cruises to lead enrichment programmes and presentations.

The artwork will initially be installed onboard Oosterdam during a scheduled drydock in April and will then move fleetwide over the next several years.

“Great works of art have always been the centrepiece of our onboard décor and we’re excited that this partnership with Rijksmuseum will add some spectacular reproductions to our collection of more than 1,300 pieces fleetwide,” said Orlando Ashford, HAL president. “Through art, like travel, we see things differently; we open our eyes to the world around us and see things we may never have experienced before.”

HAL has also become a sponsor of the Rijksmuseum, which was founded in The Hague, Netherlands in 1800, moved to the Royal Palace in Amsterdam in 1808 and moved to its current location in 1885. Rijksmuseum has a collection of a million objects dating back to 1200, with 8,000 works currently on display.

“Both Rijksmuseum and HAL are historic brands with proud Dutch heritage,” said Wim Pijbes, general director of the Rijksmuseum. “We’re grateful that through our new partnership, HAL guests from around the world will be able to experience our impressive collection at the Rijksmuseum at Sea, created by Rijksstudio.”
