Holland Shipyards Group is to build an additional electric ferry for Schlepp- und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK), as the operator renews its current fleet. The shipbuilder has previously delivered a hybrid and full electric vessel for SFK and is currently constructing three additional hybrid ferries for the line too.

The design of the new vessel, which will be named Wellingdorf, will be identical to the previously delivered electric vessel Düsternbrook. The ship will be entirely powered by batteries, with an installed capacity of 1,092-kilowatt-hours. She will also be equipped with 20 solar panels on the roof, which will help to power the onboard electrical system.

The new vessels will replace conventional fossil fuel-powered vessels in SFK’s fleet. The operator is aiming to meet environmental goals set out by the city of Kiel, Germany, which expects to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Wellingdorf is scheduled to enter service in mid-2022.
