Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has contracted Goldbeck West to construct its third cruise terminal, which is scheduled for completion in May 2015.
As part of the turnkey contract, Goldebeck West’s Hamburg office will prepare the planning application documents and build the terminal.
Consisting of two parts – departures in the western part and arrivals in the eastern part – the 10,600 sq m, single-storey terminal building will have the capacity to handle more than 8,000 passengers per ship visit. Travellers will board the cruise ships via the passenger routing hallway on the first floor – which will be accessible by stairs, elevator and escalator – and a passenger boarding bridge.
“Apart from excellent transport connections, having the quay edge available is a real location advantage,” said Jens Meier, chairman of HPA’s management board. “We will be able to service modern cruise liners of a length of more than 330m and make the cruise port Hamburg fit for the future.”
Construction of the terminal building is set to begin at the end of July 2014, while the building’s facade is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Other upcoming construction projects include a car park for 1,500 private vehicles, coaches, taxis and trucks, as well as two passenger boarding bridges. The terminal is expected to be operational by June 2015.
“The port has seen strong growth in the cruise trade, which has given a boost to tourism in the city,” said Frank Horch, Hamburg minister for economic and labour affairs. “Hamburg has already invested substantially in cruise infrastructure. With the realisation of the third cruise terminal at Kronprinzkai in the central port area, we can meet the shipping lines’ demand for efficient terminal capacities. Hamburg’s entire business community will benefit from this development.”
