Norwegian coastal operator Hurtigruten is to replace the ‘heavy and flashy’ 1990s interiors onboard four of its passenger vessels in 2016.

Named ‘New Arctic Interior’, the new interior design concept onboard Polarlys, Kong Harald, Nordkapp and Nordnorge will showcase a ‘modern Scandinavian look’ that has been inspired by Norway’s coastline.

“We have merged the look of modern discovery with a contemporary feel, stylish and yet unpretentious,” said the company in a press release. “The interior will reflect the breathtaking coastal landscapes we pass every day and the colours are inspired by the coast and the sea. Many of the materials are natural, such as wood, slate and leather.”

Hurtigruten will upgrade the ships’ public areas, including the receptions, cafés and bistro areas, fitness rooms and the aft deck. In addition, the onboard bar will be moved to the panoramic lounge, the bakery will offer a range of fresh pastries, while guests will be able to enjoy the ‘catch of the day’ from barbecue stands on the outside deck. New menus will be based on coastal recipes, while fresh ingredients will com from local suppliers.

Polarlys will be the first to undergo a 22-day drydock starting in January 2016.
