Interferry, the association representing the ferry industry worldwide, will host a workshop on African ferry safety at its 48th annual conference on 30 October 2024. The half-day workshop aims to build upon the Africa Ferry Safety Seminar in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in April 2024, which was hosted by Interferry and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The association aims to create the African Ferry Safety Program in collaboration with African ferry leaders, which it hopes will improve safety standards across the continent, as well as help to reduce the high level of incidents in some states.
The invitation-only workshop will use roundtable discussions with African ferry operators and regulators to prioritise initiatives identified through surveys carried out following the event in Dar es Salaam. Participants will explore how Interferry can support the implementation of these initiatives with potential options including fostering best practice sharing through networking events, enhancing crew training, and supporting the use of technology to improve safety and operational efficiency.
“The positive spirit and commitment at the Dar es Salaam seminar were truly inspiring,” said Mike Corrigan, CEO of Interferry. “This follow-up session allows us to leverage that momentum and work together to tackle the challenges of ferry safety in Africa.”
