Finnish manufacturer Langh Tech is to deliver exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) for Norwegian Cruise Line’s two Breakaway Plus-class newbuilds.
All five engines on each ship, which will be built at Meyer Werft’ Papenburg in Germany, will be equipped with hybrid scrubbers to enable them to operate in close-loop mode. The vessels will also be fitted with treatment plants for the scrubber water.
“The scrubber tower is of our design but will be manufactured at the shipyard,” said Laura Langh-Lagerlöf, commercial director at Langh Tech. “The components for the water treatment plant will be manufactured at our production facility at Piikkiö, Finland, and delivered to the shipyard.”
Langh Tech has previously supplied water treatment systems for scrubber water for several scrubber retrofits on vessels in the Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises fleets.
“We have seen a positive trend in the demand of such investments for cruise vessels,” said Langh-Lagerlöf. “We have put a lot of effort in entering this sector, as there seems to be a demand for scrubber solutions especially on newbuilds. After all, many cruise vessels operate in Emissions Control Areas and, despite low prices on low-sulphur marine diesel oil and marine gas oil, there is still a large price gap to the benefit of heavy fuel oil.”
