American Cruise Lines has introduced a new sustainable dining programme, which features locally sourced produce on a range of the line’s US itineraries.
American Cruise Lines, which offers more than 35 itineraries throughout the US, has introduced its ‘Cruise Local. Eat Local’ initiative to support local farmers’ markets and small American businesses by sourcing produce, fish and meats as near as possible to each cruise. The line will also communicate with local vendors and check the Seafood Watch index to understand the current impact on fish populations and limiting waste by offering half portions and carefully customised options.
“This programme not only enhances the culinary experience for our guests, but also supports local economies and a balanced environment,” said Timothy Beebe, vice president of American Cruise Lines. “Nothing makes a menu more appealing than knowing it was developed based on well-informed decisions and a conscious effort to source locally.”
Passengers sailing on the Columbia & Snake Rivers itineraries can enjoy freshly-caught Northwest salmon and sturgeon; Astoria honey, Rainier cherries and heirloom tomatoes gathered at local farmers’ markets; and ice creams with mint, huckleberries and cherries.
When travelling on south-eastern itineraries, guests can enjoy Maryland blue crabs, hand-harvested Apalachicola Bay oysters from Florida, wild Georgian shrimp, while those sailing in New England can taste lobsters, local craft beers and Root Blueberry soda from Maine.
In addition, passengers visiting the Mississippi River region can eat certified Berkshire pork from Berkwood Farms, a local vendor in Des Moines, Iowa; artisan cheeses from Wisconsin; and pralines from New Orleans.
