Horticultural design company ANS Group Europe is set to fit five of its living walls and four large specimen olive trees onboard Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity as part of a US$17 million renovation project.
The self-contained, free-standing living walls – which were first installed on Symphony in 2012 – will be installed in the alfresco dining area of Serenity’s Trident Grill during a two-week drydock at Cadiz’s Navantia shipyard in November 2013. The final installation and commissioning stages will be completed while the vessel sails from Cadiz to Lisbon after drydock.
ANS Group’s living walls act as bio filters, enhancing air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and breaking down harmful airborne contaminants, transforming them into clean oxygen.
“The installation of the five living walls on Serenity will contribute greatly to the line’s ‘Crystal Clean’ environmental and educational programme,” said Richard Silcock, managing director of ANS Group Europe. “We’re really committed to working with Crystal Cruises in providing a unique feature that adds to the cruising experience.”
As part of the renovation project, Crystal will also reconfigure the ship’s Crystal Penthouse suites and various areas on the Lido Deck, as well as carrying out various maintenance, mechanical, technical and environmental upgrades throughout the ship.
