Lloyd’s Register introduces first class notation for fin stabilisers

Marine professional services company Lloyd’s Register (LR) has introduced a new class notation for fin stabilisers, which will help to improve safety and comfort onboard cruise ships and other vessels.

The new class notation will cover the strength, machinery and control aspects of fin stabilisers, including their integration into the ship’s hull, where they work to counteract the vessel’s natural roll for a more stable voyage. The class notation has been designed to ensure the fin stabiliser is functional and reliable as the ship moves through the water.

According to LR, fin stabilisers have often been considered a ‘nice to have’ feature rather than an essential component of a ship. However, with increased demand from cruise operators looking to enhance the passenger experience, fin stabilisers have become integral to providing a smooth voyage. It is hoped the new class notation will help cruise operators to avoid unscheduled dry docking as well as reputational damage caused by poor guest experiences.

“This new class notation demonstrates LR’s commitment to evolving its rules to meet the needs of its clients,” said Lizzie McCaig, rule development team lead at LR. “While fin stabilisers are not classified as safety items, apart from their attachment to the hull, LR recognises their importance in the overall operation of the ship and the experience of passengers. By including fin stabilisers in the classification rules, LR is taking proactive steps to support shipowners and reduce their risks.”
